Does Fasting Really "Work"?

I had been thinking about for years. The truth is, I had even started fasting more times than I could remember. I'd make this great commitment to fast for 3 days or even 10 days.

Then midway through Day 2, a donut would call my name and that would be the end of all my good intentions.

Then one day, a young mother in my Bible study class announced that she'd be diagnosed with a brain tumor. At that moment, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper, "What more do you need to hear?"

I knew this was my moment. So I committed to -- and completed -- a 40 Day fast. It was the most powerful spiritual experience of my life and by the end, my student had been miraculously healed.

That began my 15-year adventure with fasting.

Several years ago, I was on the mission field in Latin America. God pressed it upon my heart to fast. After 7 days of fasting, my young-adult children were suddenly swept up into a hurricane. That morning, I felt God say "Now you know why I called you to fast."
